Top tip: Burn the candle till the top layer of wax has melted and reached the side of the glass, this will give an even burn right down the candle. Trim the wick after each burn or before you light it next, as this will stop the wax being contaminated by the burnt wick.

Orla Van den Bergh Founder

From her college summers in America, Orla brought her love of fragrances, simple elegance and artisan candles home to the Wicklow mountains. Exchanging work shifts for hands-on tuition she dived into mastering the design of candles. After a few fire-raising beginnings in the family kitchen, Max Benjamin evolved and was named in honour of Orla’s twin sons; Max and Benjamin. Growing up and living in the Wicklow mountains Orla had a huge appreciation for the outdoors and our environment which inspires all elements of our design today.
David Van den Bergh MANAGING DIRECTOR

Even though David is the youngest sibling in the Van den Bergh family he brings a sense of calm and structure into the team as he oversees the sales and operations functions within the company. After studying Finance & French in university David started his career in the software industry while living in Australia. When he returned to Ireland in 2003, Mark and Orla asked him to join them to help make their plans for Max Benjamin come to life.

Mark started his career in sales working abroad in Germany selling Irish Beer before making a shift to acting where he delved into theatre and some TV work, which comes in very handy when we need him in front of the camera! Coming from an entrepreneurial background Mark always had the desire to run his own business and after Orla had set up Max Benjamin, Mark took the opportunity with both hands to join her and put his selling skills to the test. From here he gained invaluable experience on product development and design which took him to Florence to do a course in the internationally recognised Florence Institute of Design.

Our Belgian father and Irish mother moved to this remote and beautiful part of Ireland back in the 70’s, bringing with them a classic Flemish aesthetic. As children, growing up in the wilds of Glencree Valley, this love of design and adventure was passed on to us. Having arrived back from New York in 1996, founder Orla Van den Bergh, started the candle-making business. Renamed Max Benjamin after her twin boys, Max and Ben, our founding philosophy — to uplift everyday lives through the power of evocative scent — is as true today as it was back then. We are now one of Ireland's leading makers of handmade home fragrance products globally. Using only 100% natural wax, our scents are inspired by both our travels around the world and by the natural habitat on our doorstep, helping you relax and unwind.

Our natural environment is a priceless part of our heritage and daily inspiration. A healthy natural environment is vitally important for all eco-systems and it is our responsibility to protect it and while we are not perfect yet, being as sustainable as we possibly can is an essential element to our business and is of huge importance to our customers. We use natural soy wax in our candles as it is more environmentally friendly and produces a cleaner burn than paraffin wax. Our wicks are made from lead free Italian cotton and our wooden diffuser reeds are sustainably sourced. Our candle and diffuser vessels are glass and fully recyclable and we have refill options available in our diffuser refills and car fragrance refills to help customers reuse these so they can be as environmentally friendly as possible. Our packaging is kept to a minimum and is fully recyclable in keeping with our efforts to be as sustainable as we possibly can.
