Description: The General Post Office is one of the most interesting buildings in Dublin. It’s not just one of the most elegant buildings in Dublin, with its six imposing Ionic columns, it was the last of the great Georgian public buildings of its kind erected in Dublin. The GPO was the main stronghold for the Irish volunteers during The Rising and came under heavy attack. As a result, the building was destroyed by fire but was rebuilt many years later the Irish Free State government. Bullet holes are still visible in the columns to this day. Today the building functions as the headquarters of An Post, the Irish Postal Service.
